RSAI Mourns the Tragic Loss of Educator Dickson Kupi Yorkor in Fatal Road Crash

Road Safety Action International (RSAI) acknowledges with deep sorrow the tragic road traffic crash that claimed the life of Mr. Dickson Kupi Yorkor, Principal of Paynesville Seventh-day Adventist High School, in February 2026.

Mr. Yorkor was an educator, mentor, and staunch advocate for road safety. He recently supported the introduction of the ROYERS Road Safety Club, a flagship program of RSAI, at the Seventh-day Adventist High School, where he served as Principal. During the establishment of the club, Mr. Yorkor provided RSAI with the necessary support to successfully set it up and facilitate the recruitment of five (5) students. We have since begun building the capacity of these students to cascade road safety lessons to their peers.

The untimely death of Mr. Yorkor serves as a stark reminder of the pressing road safety crisis in Liberia. Road traffic crashes continue to claim lives indiscriminately, including those of educators, students, and community leaders. Now more than ever, this tragedy underscores that road crashes constitute a national crisis that demands urgent and sustained attention.

A review of recent incidents and road conditions across Liberia suggests that many crashes result from multiple systemic failures, including:

  • Reckless or negligent driving
    • Poorly maintained and unsafe vehicles
  • Inadequate road infrastructure, including the lack of pedestrian facilities and signage
  • Limited enforcement of traffic laws

The death of Mr. Dickson Kupi Yorkor is a painful loss, but it should also serve as a wake-up call for every Liberian, particularly the transport and law enforcement authorities, to act decisively to prevent further loss of life on our roads. Every life saved is an investment in the nation’s future.

RSAI calls on the Government of Liberia, law enforcement agencies, transport planners, and communities to prioritize the following measures as a means of saving lives:

  • Strengthen traffic law enforcement and impose stricter penalties for unsafe driving
  • Improve road infrastructure and safety features
  • Implement nationwide road safety education campaigns targeting schools and youth
  • Adopt the Safe System Approach across all road planning, policy development, and enforcement
